I broke an agent in production because of a JSON response.
The API worked fine. It always had. Humans read it, humans understood it, humans moved on. Then I pointed an autonomous agent at the same endpoint and watched it loop for six tries trying to parse a message like “User created successfully with ID 12345” into something it could act on. That was the moment I stopped assuming an API is an API and started testing what actually changes when the caller on the other end is not a person clicking through Postman, but a model deciding what to do next.

So I ran the same integration task three times. Once against a traditional REST API. Once against an API that claims to be “AI agent ready.” Once through an MCP server. Here is what actually changed, what did not, and what I would tell you before you wire your own agent up to anything.
