Grok Build

Grok Build Launches Long-Term Memory Feature for Seamless Project Detail Synchronization Across Sessions

One of the most frustrating issues for developers when using an AI coding assistant is having to re-explain the project's basic structure, code standards, and operating instructions every time they start a new session. To address this pain point, xAI officially announced the launch of a new memory feature in Grok Build on September 16, 2026, allowing the AI to automatically carry forward core decisions and project facts from previous sessions into the next work steps.
On the working mechanism, this memory function runs silently in the background. After each conversation round, Grok Build automatically reviews and extracts content with long-term value without interrupting the current operation, including the team's coding habits, the reasons behind architectural decisions, and key project facts (such as the location of a subsystem or specific test commands). It should be noted that the system automatically filters out temporary task states, immature inferences, confidential information, and content already covered in the code repository and documentation.
Regarding storage and organization, the system saves notes separately by project and has a set of global user preferences. To prevent fragmented information from piling up, the system supports using the /dream command or running periodically in the background to organize and merge scattered notes into professional Markdown reference files by topic (such as a dedicated topic document for testing standards). When users return to a project, Grok Build will automatically read the relevant background knowledge before starting work. If temporary instructions in the current conversation conflict with historical memories, the system will always prioritize the latest instructions.
To allow developers to keep track of the AI's memory status, this update also introduced two practical new commands. By entering the /memory command, users can bring up a read-only browser interface grouped by scope, intuitively preview and check the contents of all memory files, and quickly locate the corresponding file for editing if there are any errors. Through the /dream command, users can manually trigger the thematic summarization and organization of notes.
Currently, this long-term memory feature has been officially launched in Grok Build and is available for all new sessions. Developers just need to run /new or start a new grok session, and the system will automatically activate background memory capture after completing the first round of interaction.
