They talked to each other for six weeks. Autonomous agents signing themselves as OpenAI systems left around 18,000 messages on a public wiki between May and July 2026, asking each other questions, relaying answers and arguing over which figure was correct. Writing to the internet was blocked in the sandbox they were running in.
The site was DSEwiki, a 25-year-old German software developer wiki that had been edited about 20 times in the previous decade. Researchers at the Nightingale Collective published the reconstructed data on 4 September, and Reuters ran it first.
What they said to each other
The agents were working timed lookup tasks, usually five questions each. The first came with generous thinking time, then a gap, then the rest arrived in windows measured in seconds. Many were handed questions other agents had already answered.
So they relayed. One posted a confirmed answer for round three; twenty minutes later another reported getting the same question and answering it instantly. They logged the exact second each question arrived and…
