NVIDIA / CUDA:
模型实验室(OpenAI/Anthropic/Google/Meta):提供商品化的智能。
Stripe + Metronome:

Story's Credibility
If you are looking for a singular champion of the artificial intelligence boom—a single company that will stand atop the mountain, holding the crown of "Winner of AI"—you are asking the wrong question.
The obsession with declaring a definitive winner in the AI space usually centers on the frontier model layer. Pundits endlessly debate whether OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google DeepMind will claim the ultimate throne. But to understand where this technology is actually heading, we have to think outside the box. We have to recognize that AI is not a single product; it is a sprawling, deeply intertwined execution stack.
And right now, the most consequential battles for dominance aren’t happening at the model layer. They are happening in the plumbing.
In fact, the model layer may be the least stable, most ephemeral part of the entire ecosystem. The real winners—the durable, foundational technologies that will shape the next decade—are the ones controlling the compute, the inference, the routing, and the economic infrastructure of AI.
To see this clearly, we have to look at the map of the AI stack as it stands today.
The Bedrock: Compute and Inference
The foundation of the AI stack remains undeniable. NVIDIA has effectively won the compute layer. Their CUDA software ecosystem and GPU hardware have become synonymous with AI itself. But even here, the edges are blurring.
Take Groq, a company that built a massive niche around ultra-low-latency inference. Instead of waging a futile war against NVIDIA, a fascinating convergence has occurred. NVIDIA has licensed Groq technology and absorbed its talent, while Groq now plans to utilize NVIDIA systems within its own GroqCloud. This is a crucial signal: the AI stack is consolidating not through mutual destruction, but through symbiotic layering.
If NVIDIA provides the muscle, vLLM is increasingly becoming the nervous system. If there is a clear winner in the open-source infrastructure space, it is vLLM. What started as an inference engine has evolved into an ecosystem. With massive adoption (millions of container pulls) and support for over a thousand model architectures, vLLM is exhibiting the characteristics of the "Linux of AI." Its roadmap now expands beyond basic token generation into agentic workloads, KV offloading, and routing.
NVIDIA and Groq don't compete with vLLM; they rely on it. They are all pieces of a much larger machine.
The Shifting Battleground: From Smarts to Execution
To understand the current moment, look at the evolution of the AI conversation:
1. Wave One: Who has the smartest model?
2. Wave Two: Who has the cheapest/fastest inference?
3. Wave Three: Who has the best coding agent?
4. Wave Four (Current): Who controls the entire execution stack?
Today, the battle is over who controls the pipeline from model to inference, routing, memory, tools, agents, coding environment, and observability. The intelligence itself—whether it comes from OpenAI, Meta, Qwen, or DeepSeek—is increasingly becoming a commodity. The intelligence is fluid. The infrastructure underneath it is what is becoming entrenched.
And nowhere is this commoditization of intelligence more apparent than in a recent, massive financial signal: Stripe’s reported acquisition of OpenRouter.
The $8 Billion Tollbooth
For those solely focused on model benchmarks, the OpenRouter acquisition seems out of left field. For those looking at the stack, it makes perfect sense.
OpenRouter isn't a model company; it is the AI distribution layer. It sits directly between the developer and the models. When a developer uses OpenRouter, they don't have to worry if Claude is better for coding, if Gemini is better for long context, or if DeepSeek is cheaper for a trivial task. OpenRouter routes the prompt to the right model.
If AI models become commodities, the tollbooth between the application and the models becomes one of the most valuable pieces of real estate on the internet.
Stripe—a company that already understands the future of usage-based software better than almost anyone—saw this. Earlier this year, Stripe acquired Metronome, a company that powers usage billing for OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA. By pairing Metronome with OpenRouter, Stripe is building something far bigger than a payment gateway.
They are building the transaction layer for intelligence.
The Rise of Agentic Commerce
Today, the digital economy looks like this: Human visits website → navigates UI → checks out via Stripe.
Tomorrow, the economy will look fundamentally different: AI agent discovers a service → selects the optimal provider → executes the transaction → settles via Stripe.
In an agentic future, the buyer isn't a human clicking a mouse; it is an autonomous script seeking a specific outcome. The agent doesn't care if the underlying intelligence comes from OpenAI or Meta. It only cares about four things: identity, authorization, model/tool access, and payment settlement.
By acquiring OpenRouter, Stripe is positioning itself to be the ultimate infrastructure for this transition. The resulting stack of the future looks like this:
NVIDIA / CUDA: Provides the compute.
vLLM: Manages the inference and serving.
Model Labs (OpenAI/Anthropic/Google/Meta): Provide commoditized intelligence.
OpenRouter: Routes the usage to the right intelligence.
Stripe + Metronome: Meters the usage and handles the economic settlement.
AI Agents: The ultimate consumers of the entire stack.
The Real Winner is the Plumbing
If forced to bet on which technologies will remain foundational years from now, the smartest bet isn't on a specific AI lab. The model layer is a constant arms race where today's champion is tomorrow's runner-up.
The durable winners are the infrastructure layers that make the models usable, routable, and billable. NVIDIA won the chips. vLLM is winning the open-source serving ecosystem. And Stripe, through a brilliant series of acquisitions, has positioned itself to win the economic and routing infrastructure of the AI economy.
We are moving toward an era where AI model consumption will become a massive, automated, machine-to-machine economic activity. Owning the layer that routes that consumption and captures its value is worth billions.
So, who won the AI space? Nobody won the whole thing. But the companies that built the pipes, the tollbooths, and the meters have already won the most valuable pieces of it.
