The Agents API reports six kinds of subagent call. In the open-source harness OpenAI says powers it, one generation has five of them and the other has four.
The subagent tool set your local Codex declares is close to the Agents API’s — but not the same one, and a config key that defaults to the older generation decides which of two you get. Three commands and one script count the gap; one line switches generations.
01 — The six subagent calls the API will report back
The Agents API went to public beta on 2026–09–10. The announcement is explicit about the foundation: OpenAI operates the harness while “developers can inspect and learn from its public codebase”, pointing at github.com/openai/codex. Both surfaces are declared in public, so the promise is testable.
