Member-only story Artificial Intelligence LLM Generative Ai Tools Ai Infrastructure Machine Learning AI Models Are Learning to Guess Ahead — And It’s Making Inference Much Faster Large language models normally generate one token at a time. Speculative decoding cha₹nges the game by letting AI predict several possible tokens ahead — then verify them all at once. Pop Alexandru 10 min read · 1 day ago -- Listen Share Press enter or click to view image in full size Source: IBM Research Most people imagine an AI model producing an answer the same way a person might type one: word after word until the sentence is finished. That is surprisingly close to what actually happens inside a traditional language model. The model predicts one token. Then it predicts the next token using everything that came before it. Then another. And another. A 500-token response can therefore require hundreds of sequential generation steps, each repeatedly touching billions of model parameters. That design is remarkably effective, but it also creates one of the strangest inefficiencies in modern AI inference. GPUs are built for enormous amounts of parallel computation, yet token generation often forces them into a loop where each new token depends on the one immediately before it. What if the system could make several educated guesses about the future, then ask the large model to check all of them together?
