As an SEO specialist and co-founder of @TechLookBD, clients ask me this all the time. Searchable tracked more than 4,000 new articles for 60 days to answer it, and the results changed how I reply.
ChatGPT’s median time to first citation was 3.5 days. Of the articles ChatGPT cited within 60 days, 26% were cited on day one.
Claude’s median was 9.5 days, 2.7 times longer.
When both engines cited the same article, ChatGPT arrived first 72% of the time.
The number I keep coming back to is 19%. Only 19% of articles received a citation from either engine within 60 days. Roughly four in five got nothing in the window.
So here is how I now frame timelines. The 3.5-day median describes articles ChatGPT cited. Not every new page should expect a citation within days. Going two months uncited was the most common outcome in the sample, and by itself this does not point to a technical problem with your page.
Marketers face two separate questions: how long a citation takes, and how likely your content is to earn one at all. Set expectations on both before you promise results from AI search.
Next, I want to see whether articles cited early keep getting cited more often, or whether the early advantage fades.
What are you seeing with your own content?
