Meta Admits Rarely That Its Product Design Was Deeply Influenced by OpenClaw After Being Accused of Copying It

Nat Friedman, product manager of Meta's Super Intelligent Lab (MSL), recently responded on X that their AI agent product Muse "was indeed deeply influenced by OpenClaw" in terms of product design, but Muse was "created from scratch."
This response came after a widely shared post by Ansh Nanda, co-founder of an AI application, who claimed that "Muse is basically OpenClaw for regular users," and shared a conversation with Muse, in which the AI agent admitted that the similarity between its system files and OpenClaw was not a "coincidence" but a "match."
The community later discovered that Muse also includes a SOUL.md file—a plain text configuration file written in Markdown used to define the personality, communication style, values, behavioral boundaries, and expertise areas of the AI agent. Its content is almost identical to that of OpenClaw's file. In response to questioning, Friedman did not deny it, only replying, "We think Peter (Steinberger, the creator of OpenCllaw) did everything completely right."
Friedman was former CEO of GitHub and joined Meta last year along with Meta's Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang. He revealed that after trying OpenClaw in January this year, he had purchased hundreds of Mac minis for the MSL team, many of whom then fell in love with OpenClaw and other personal agent software. The goal of developing Muse was to create a product similar to OpenClaw, making it safe, reliable, easy to use, and scalable to billions of users.
OpenClaw is an open-source project, so it is not surprising that Meta has drawn inspiration from its design. OpenAI had previously lured away its founder earlier this year. This also continues Meta's usual strategy: absorbing promising products and replicating their best features. The most famous example was the adoption of Snapchat Stories functionality.
